Dear Theatre Colleague,

As a designer, teacher of design, former dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University and past president of the Associated Designers of Canada, I have been aware of the challenges faced by young designers in making the transition from school into the professional practice of stage design.

Last year I worked with Eleanor Antoncic, Production Manager of Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre, on a proposed (subject to funding) internship in design for the Tarragon 2013-14 season, the goal being to assist a recent design graduate in that transition. I’m pleased to report that 15 applications were received from across Canada and five young designers were short-listed and interviewed.

The internship proposal was successful in its funding application and we are now just past mid-way in first year. All those participating – the intern, the Tarragon staff and the Tarragon guest designers – are reporting that the internship is successfully achieving its goal. As a result, Tarragon will be applying for
funding for a second internship for the 2014-15 season.

I have attached the ad inviting applications and would appreciate your passing this on to anyone you feel would be interested. Since the proposed funding organization is committed to building the arts in Ontario, the successful candidate should be an Ontario resident or, at very least, someone who intends
to develop their career in Ontario.

Please contact me if you or your suggested applicant(s) have any questions.

Many thanks,
Phil
