Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track position of Assistant Professor in English with EAL/ESL Specialization.

This position is situated within the Faculty of Culture + Community, which is dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the critical interplay between theory and practice within a studio environment. The successful applicant will teach 50% within the English curriculum and 50% to serve as the EAL/ESL Specialist for the Writing Centre where the faculty member will deliver one-on-one writing instruction to students with ESL needs; design and deliver workshops for ESL students and for faculty working with ESL students; and work with the Coordinator of the Writing Centre to develop support materials for both students and faculty on frequent areas of ESL concern.

Candidates must have completed a Masters degree or higher in English or other related field and have a record of successful teaching to linguistically and culturally diverse students in a post-secondary institution. Candidates must have at least two years’ experience teaching first year English literature and composition as well as some experience teaching students one-on-one in a Writing Centre or other academic support context. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of research into theories of language acquisition, writing pedagogy and/or best practices in either or both fields. A sound understanding of the unique attributes of writing pedagogy in an art, media, and design environment would be a strong asset. While familiarity with current best practices of ESL writing pedagogy will be one of the primary determiners of success in this role, the ideal candidate will also have experience teaching the other three skills central to language acquisition - speaking, reading and listening - in an academic context. Experience teaching English in college-or university-based Academic Bridging Programs would be an asset. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an active creative and/or academic writing practice.

While the primary focus of this position is teaching, faculty are also expected to contribute to the fabric and future of the University through curriculum development and planning, participation on administrative committees, graduate student supervision, research/professional practice, and student advising as well as attendance at events that demonstrate an active engagement with the Emily Carr community.
