The Board of the Canadian Association of Fine Arts Deans invites proposals for its fall conference that
link to one of the following themes. The conference is hosted by the University of Victoria and takes
place from October 10-11, 2019.
Building Resilient Students: Strategies for Supporting Mental Health and Wellness
From recruiting students, to retaining them, to ensuring they have a successful and positive experience
at our institutions, student mental health and wellness impacts everyone. We welcome proposals that
share best practices, innovative programs, case studies, structural supports or other areas that address
the theme of building resilient students.
Building Resilient Faculties: Strategies for Supporting Faculty Members and Staff
As we look to recruit and retain colleagues, we’re learning more about the challenges of supporting new
faculty and staff, workload issues, and the need to support mid- and later-career faculty and staff. This
session welcomes proposals that address best practices, innovative ideas, evaluation policies and
assessment practices, recruitment guides, and formal and informal ways to build resilient Faculties.
Arts and Indigenous Language Recovery and Revitalization
The United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages (https://en.iyil2019.org/):
“Languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of people, not only as a tool for communication,
education, social integration and development, but also as a repository for each person’s unique
identity, cultural history, traditions and memory. But despite their immense value, languages around the
world continue to disappear at an alarming rate.” Looking across the country, our institutions and
Faculties offer exciting and unique programs that support language revitalization and the role of the
arts. This session welcomes proposals that share programs and experiences from your institutions on
Indigenous languages and revitalization.
Artistic Migrations: Internationalization and the Fine Arts
Canadian universities are deeply involved in international activities in an effort to recruit students,
support international student success, increase the mobility of domestic students, strengthen
partnerships, or build research and artistic collaborations. This session welcome proposals that address
your Faculty’s response to internationalization and what challenges or opportunities you see in the next
five years.
Proposal Length: 300 words (single presenter) and up to 1000 words for a group proposal
Send Proposals to: Edward Jurkowski, Vice-Chair of CAFAD (edward.jurkowski@umanitoba.ca)
Proposal Deadline: May 1, 2019
Decision Date: Responses by June 15, 2019
