NSCAD University, formerly the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, is an internationally recognized leading centre for the study, practice, and teaching of visual arts. Canada’s first arts school, NSCAD has a rich and esteemed history spanning over 128 years. Today, the university offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in the divisions of foundation studies, fine and media arts, craft, design, art history and critical studies, as well as a rich portfolio of Extended Studies courses and community engagements. NSCAD Faculty and Alumni are among Canada’s most highly regarded artists, gallery directors, designers, curators, and art educators; they are well-represented in arts organizations world-wide as leading practitioners and influencers. With the planned retirement of the incumbent in 2015, NSCAD University is currently seeking its next Provost and Vice-President (Academic & Research).

Working closely with the new President on the direct implementation of the strategic plan, the Provost and Vice-President (Academic & Research) provides academic vision, inspiring leadership and stewardship of resources to ensure the delivery of high quality student experience and success; achievement of leading research outputs; and provision of academic programming and scholarly excellence. The Provost and Vice-President (Academic & Research) leads a dynamic team of professionals in the Office of Academic Affairs, Student and Academic Services, Admissions, Library, Office of the Dean, School of Extended Studies, Office of Research Services and Industry Liaison, and the Anna Leonowens Gallery.

The Provost and Vice President provides academic vision and leadership; stewards and manages academic learning and teaching resources; ensures quality delivery of graduate and undergraduate programs and student experience; leads and supports funded research and dissemination of research outputs; and connects with external stakeholders.

The ideal candidates understand NSCAD’s unique place in Canada and the world of art, craft and design, and will build on the institution’s reputation and position from local to national and international arenas. They will have proven leadership and administrative abilities acquired at a senior level in an academic setting, and hold the highest academic credentials in their discipline. They will have a passion to embrace and promote the creative arts, and the capacity to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, the Board of Governors, and Federal and Provincial Government officials. Experience working in a senior administrative role at a comparable arts institution, a small and passionate community working together within a regulatory framework is key critical to achievement and success in this role.
