Assistant Professor in Industrial Design, Emily Carr University of Art + Design
Emily Carr University of Art + Design, a world-renowned learning community dedicated to research and the education of artists and designers, invites applications for a full-time tenure track position of Assistant Professor in Industrial Design.
The Industrial Design major focuses on developing design by applying a human-centered methodology. The program places particular emphasis on sustainable design and design in support of local entrepreneurship, healthy living, and interactive products and environments, and is one of three design majors in the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media. The degrees and majors in the DDM Faculty have shared values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, technological engagement, new research methods and approaches to design, and creating imaginative and provocative work within a cultural context.
Candidates should possess the ability to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to make a major contribution in developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of cross-disciplinary design faculty comprising industrial design, interaction design, and communication design. Candidates should be equally fluent in design discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to contribute to curriculum development and planning, participate in portfolio reviews and upper-level design critiques, provide undergraduate and graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees and be an active and engaged member of the Emily Carr community.
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in at least two of the following areas: smart objects, interactive environments, strategic design, sustainable design, prototyping, design entrepreneurship, product design, and/or free-hand design drawing, but who can work effectively in interdisciplinary design teams on theme-based curriculum focusing on ethical design practices (cultural, socio/political, and sustainability issues). Candidates should also be fluent in participatory design research methods and understand the importance of full-scale iterative modeling as a part of the design process.
Candidates should have a MDes, MFA in Design or advanced masters-level degree in related discipline, strong evidence of excellence in industrial design work, a minimum of 2 years experience in design research and/or design practice, demonstrated experience of technical and digital skills, understanding of traditional/formal design principles, excellent collaborative, communication and problem-solving skills and minimum of two years related post-secondary teaching experience. In addition, a candidate is expected to have a relevant independent research and/or design practice. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a commitment and knowledge of design issues related to sustainability, and who are fluent in participatory design research methods. Applicants with greater experience with the rank of Associate Professor may also be considered.
