The University of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts’ Department of New Media invites applications for a two-year appointment in new media/video at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing August 1, 2022. This position is subject to the approval of the Board of Governors.

The University of Lethbridge (uLethbridge) is a comprehensive and research-intensive university founded on the principles of liberal education, where inspired scholars integrate research and creative activity with teaching. Iniskim (The Blackfoot name of the University of Lethbridge) was established in 1967 on traditional Blackfoot land and is a place where student engagement in learning, creative activities, and research take place every day. With campuses in Lethbridge and Calgary, uLethbridge offers more than 150 undergraduate and 60 graduate programs to more than 8,900 students in the faculties of Arts & Science, Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, the Schools of Liberal Education and Graduate Studies, and the Dhillon School of Business.

Qualifications and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the ongoing development of the department’s undergraduate and graduate degrees in New Media, conduct a program of research and/or creative activity, engage with community, and participate actively in collegial governance at the department, faculty, and university levels.

Course assignments will be primarily undergraduate courses in video, as well as other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Courses may include Video Fundamentals, Emerging Video Technology, and Visual Effects. Additional desirable attributes include an ability to teach a foundational New Media introductory course, History and Theory of New Media, and/or a special topic based on demonstrable proficiencies.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience with current video technologies and production methods, including lighting and audio production equipment. A mastery of non-linear editing is essential. Additionally, the candidate will have a record of research or production practice using spatially-based technologies and production workflows. This may include, for example: in-camera real-time VFX production, immersive installation, 360° video, projection mapping and video applications for augmented and virtual reality. The faculty member will have the ability to apply interdisciplinary approaches to instruction, and will bring theoretical, social, cultural knowledge and critique to new media practice and pedagogy.

M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree is required.

The Department of New Media provides a comprehensive education through research and instruction that explores the interconnectivity between technology, art, industry, and culture. Graduates of our programs understand the ways in which emerging technologies are related to other media forms and convergent cultural activities. Our faculty are artists, designers, scholars, and industry professionals who help students acquire the creative, critical, and technical skills necessary to be responsible, resourceful, and media literate citizens in a variety of professional practices.

The course load for this position is 5 undergraduate courses or equivalent per year. There is also the possibility for Graduate supervision or committee work.
