Position description

The Department of Design and Computation Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Interaction Design to begin August 1, 2023. Duties include research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution.
Interaction Design has an immeasurable and omnipresent impact on how we make sense of contemporary life, including but not limited to how we work, play, perceive, and respond to the world. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in solidifying and strengthening the Department’s existing commitments to interaction design as a research endeavour and as a core perspective and skillset taught to students in our Design Major (DART), Computation Arts (CART), and Master of Design (MDes) programs.
The ideal candidate is a creative practitioner (recent industry practice will be considered a significant asset), researcher, and maker whose agenda is driven by theoretical, social, political, and technical concerns. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an active profile in research communities directly engaged with interaction design. Diversity, inclusivity, sustainability, social justice, and systems thinking are especially important to the Department’s orientation towards design. Preference will be given to candidates addressing these issues through their work. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research and creation involves one or more of the following areas:
  • Critical interaction design (e.g., critical design, speculative design, design fiction, adversarial design)
  • Interaction design and ethics, equity, and social justice (e.g., decolonial pedagogies, participatory design, design for and with equity-seeking groups)
  • Interaction design and procedurality (e.g., designing around algorithms and agents)
  • Interaction design and space (e.g., physical and virtual interactions, XR/VR/AR)
  • Interaction design and the built environment (e.g., architectural and urban installations, sensory engagement)


Qualifications and assets
Candidates must have a terminal degree (such as a PhD, MFA, or MDes) or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience. The main criteria for selection are scholarly and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly and creative output that demonstrates potential for independent research-creation leading to peer assessed publications, exhibitions, or other outputs and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates are encouraged to share any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals in their letter of application. Since this position supports academic functions of the university, proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is an asset.
