Qualifications and Assets

Candidates must have, at minimum, a completed MA in Art Therapy. Professional certification as a Registered Art Therapist is required: Art Therapist Registered (ATR from Art Therapy Credentials Board, Inc.), Art Therapist Registered-Board Certified (ATR-BC from Art Therapy Credentials Board, Inc.) or Registered Canadian Art Therapist (RCAT from Canadian Art Therapy Association). Candidates must provide evidence of extensive clinical experience and expertise as an art therapist working with a range of clientele in various settings. Also required is evidence of effective supervision of art therapy graduate students in clinical work. Other required qualifications include demonstrated evidence of, or potential for:


  • Outstanding contributions to teaching art therapy courses, including research courses, at the graduate level
  • Outstanding contributions to the field of art therapy and to collaborative community and university service activities
  • The intentional integration of social justice principles, such as Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in teaching and supervision


Other assets include:


  • A completed PhD (or a PhD near completion)



  • Holding a Quebec psychotherapist permit or provincial/state equivalent
  • Holding certification as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)
